Antonio Joseph was born about 1817 in Portugal. He married Elizabeth Thompson in Mobile, Alabama, in 1844. Antonio became a citizen of the United States in July of 1853 in Mobile. He later appeared in Franklin County, Florida for many years as a Stevedore in Appalachicola. Antonio's son, also Antonio Joseph, was born in 1845 in Mobile, Alabama. Antonio enlisted in 1861, in Capt. Johnson's B Company,county of Escambia, in the State of Florida, 1st Confed. Batln Regiment, of the State of Florida. He was honorably discharged in1865, on the end of the war, in the State of Virginia. Antonio Jr's brother, Cornelius Nelson, was born in Mobile and also settled in Pensacola. According to his great great granddaughter, Melanie Marsh, "he walked two miles every day into town to eat breakfast and then two miles back even when he was in his 90's. Joseph of 605 North Davis street, has been saying lately. Yesterday he got his wish. His son-in-law, Frank Williams, arranged for Mr. Joseph, who has been confined to his bed for some time, to make the trip to the polls in an ambulance. At 10 a.m. the aged man was helped into the voting place at precinct 13, Red's News Stand, to triumphantly vote the Democratic ticket. Cornelius died December 4, 1940. |
